Senior Trader – Fixed Income
The Senior Trader – Fixed Income is responsible for managing the bank’s fixed income trading activities, including government securities, Eurobonds, money market instruments, and any other fixed income products including derivatives. The role focuses on maximizing trading profitability while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, internal risk limits, ALCO guidance, and the bank’s overall asset-liability management (ALM) strategy.
This is a senior role whose holder will be responsible for relationship management of both internal and external stakeholders for efficient balance sheet management, generating business, and providing thought leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Trading & Portfolio Management
• Responsible for fixed income trading in Treasury Bonds, Eurobonds, FI derivatives, Treasury Bills, and other debt instruments.
• Manage and optimize the bank’s fixed income portfolio to achieve targeted returns within approved risk limits.
• Efficient and effective management of the bank’s assets and liabilities to achieve the desired business growth and profitability as well as prudently managing the bank’s liquidity.
• Monitoring market trends, interest rate movements, and macroeconomic indicators to inform trading strategies.
• Portfolio optimization through active participation in primary and secondary markets.
• Pricing fixed income instruments accurately and ensure competitive market positioning.
• Cash flow forecasting and liquidity scenario analysis for prudent liquidity management.
• Funding of the bank’s position and Investment of surplus funds
• Maintenance of statutory requirements
• Support deposit mobilization initiatives
• Active market participation
- Market Analysis & Strategy
• Conduct in-depth research and analysis of financial markets, economic data, and monetary policy developments.
• Develop and implement trading strategies aligned with the bank’s Treasury objectives.
• Provide market insights, forecasts, and recommendations to senior management.
• Track global and local financial developments that may impact fixed income markets.
- Risk Management & Compliance
• Ensure adherence to internal risk limits, including interest rate risk, liquidity risk, and credit risk.
• Monitor trading positions and exposures daily and take corrective actions when necessary.
• Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and audit standards.
• Work closely with Market Risk, Finance, and other teams to manage and report risk exposures.
- Stakeholder Engagement
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, dealers, CBK, and market counterparties.
• Collaborate with other Treasury units to ensure cohesive strategy execution.
• Support Sales and Relationship Management teams with market insights and product structuring.
- Reporting & Documentation
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly trading reports, including P&L, risk metrics, and market commentary.
• Maintain accurate records of trades and ensure timely reconciliation.
• Contribute to Treasury performance reports and strategic planning documents.
- Mentorship & Leadership
• Provide guidance and mentorship to team members.
• Support training and development initiatives within the Treasury team.
• Act as a backup to the Head of ALM when required.
The Person
For the above position, the successful applicant should have the following: -
• Bachelor’s degree in business related field is required.
• Professional Qualifications: ACI Dealing Certificate is required.
• Professional Qualifications: CPA, CFA, or other relevant certifications are added advantages.
• Master’s degree in management and business related is added advantage.
• Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Treasury is required.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in fixed income is required.
• 3 years of experience in FXT & Bloomberg is required.
• 3 years of experience in Fixed Income Trading is required.
• 3 years of experience in Risk Management is required.
• 3 years of experience in Relationship Management is required.
• 3 years of experience in Market and Commercial Awareness is essential.
• 2 years of experience in Product development is added advantage.
